Mesothelioma Surgery
Surgery is common when treating mesothelioma. This treatment aims to remove the cancerous area and/or reduce cancer symptoms.
Surgery is not suitable for people who have mesothelioma in its later stages. Other factors that can decide whether surgery is an option include the location of the cancer, is the cancer widespread, patient's age and their health.
Cancerous areas of the chest (
pleural mesothelioma) or abdomen lining (
peritoneal mesothelioma) and some tissue around it will be removed. If the cancer is extensive part of the diaphragm (a muscle below the lungs) and/or a lung may also be removed (a pneumonectomy).
If there is a build-up of fluid in the chest (thoracentesis) or abdomen (paracentesis) these will be drained and sometimes partially replaced by drugs to help prevent a reocurrence.
