Coping With Mesothelioma: Mesothelioma Treatments - Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy

Under normal circumstances the body will identify malfunctioning cells and, as part of the body's defense mechanism, destroy them.

Cancerous cells such as mesothelioma can 'slip by' this 'immune response' and continue to grow.

Immunotherapy seeks to change the defense mechanism by using biological response modifiers (BRMs) so that it can spot - and therefore attack - these malfunctioning cells.

The BRMs are either artificial or made naturally in the body and incorporate cancer vaccines, tumor necrosis factors, interferons, monoclonal antibodies and interleukins.

If immunotherapy is used in the early stages of mesothelioma reports suggest that there is significant decrease in the size of tumors.
